Early settlers built huts, taking one step at a time
During the reign of Emperor Kang-Hsi, large groups of Han Chinese people began to move into
this untapped land. While the land along the coast of Kao-Ping River was subject to constant flooding,
the flood also produced fertile soil excellent for farming purposes. For hundreds of years, in order to
prevent houses from being threatened by natural disaster, early settlers began building huts to serve as
temporary homes. The “Shipuliao”, “Chouzhouliao”, “Dingdaliao” and “Shiadaliao” were
the four biggest settlements among them, and were thus collectively called “Daliao” during Japanese
colonization.
