Getting to Know Old Alian

要親近一個地方，可以走進菜市場或跟著當地人去運動；如果想再深入認識，從老厝、老樹、
老寺廟等在地的記憶開始，再好不過。
大崗山向來有「臺灣佛山」的美稱，自1763年超峰寺創立以來，現已是大崗山法派的大本山，前
山後山寺廟道場林立，信徒廣佈全臺；阿蓮區的老厝則多有百年以上歷史，是清代至此開發

屯墾的先民所建，家族在此開枝散葉，現在族人多移居外地，老厝便成為家族的祖厝；而阿
蓮的百年老樹，則承載了地方的共同記憶，是居民的重要情感寄託。

If you want to be familiar with a place, go to the local market and make some friends. But if you want to have a
deeper understanding, nothing beats paying a visit to the old houses, trees, and temples—that is, the vital part of
the local collective memory.
Dagang Mountain is known as Taiwan’s “Buddha Mountain.” With followers all across the island, Chaofeng
Temple (the Daganshan School) has used the mountain as a base from which to spread Buddhism and has opened
multiple bodhimandas on the mountain since its establishment in 1763. e ancient house of the Alian District
has a hundred-year history. During the Qing Dynasty, the Chinese moved to the area to cultivate the land, settled
down on the island, and continued their bloodline. Although their descendants are now living in dierent parts
of Taiwan, they share that very same historical house as their common root. en there is the old tree in Alian,
which is at least one hundred years old and holds a special place in the locals’ hearts.
